How Is Moldavite Formed? A Rare Story of Earth and Space

Many people ask how Moldavite is formed, and the answer begins with a powerful event that happened only once in Earth’s history. Around 15 million years ago, a large meteor struck near today’s Ries Crater in Germany. The impact was so intense that it instantly melted surrounding rock and soil.

This molten material was thrown hundreds of kilometers through the air, landing mainly in what is now the Czech Republic. As it cooled while flying, it solidified into a natural green glass known as Moldavite. Unlike ordinary crystals, Moldavite did not grow underground—it was shaped by heat, speed, and gravity in a single moment.

That is why Moldavite is extremely rare, found only in specific Czech regions, and impossible to recreate naturally.
