What Are Grains and Pulses?

  • Grains are the edible seeds of certain grasses — wheat, rice, maize (corn), barley, oats, etc. They are staple foods across the globe and provide carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins (especially B vitamins), and minerals.
  • Pulses are a subgroup of legumes: dried beans, lentils, chickpeas, peas, and others. Pulses are particularly valued for their high protein content, dietary fiber, and micronutrients like iron and zinc.
